Calculate the whole units needed to cover fixed costs with a positive unit contribution.

How to use Break-even Calculator
- Enter fixed costs for a chosen period.
- Enter unit price and variable cost.
- Check required units and compare with realistic capacity.
Example
Fixed cost 1,000, price 30 and variable cost 12 give 18 per-unit contribution and 56 required units.
Method and formula
Contribution per unit = selling price − variable cost. Required units = ceiling(fixed cost / contribution). Break-even sales shown here = required whole units × selling price. Small floating-point noise near an integer is normalized before rounding up.
Limits and supported input
Price must exceed variable cost. This is a single-product, stable-price model; it excludes tax, capacity constraints, changing costs and product mix. Inputs use one currency. Extremely large results outside safe numeric precision are rejected.
Privacy
This tool processes the input in your current browser tab. It does not upload your input or call a paid or remote API. Copying places text on your system clipboard; downloading saves a file on your device. Site hosting logs, analytics, ads, third-party embeds and other installed plugins are separate and can have their own data handling. JavaScript is required for the tool, while this explanation remains available without it.
Frequently asked questions
Why round upward?
Selling a fraction of a unit cannot cover the remaining cost in this whole-unit model.
What if variable cost equals price?
The contribution is zero, so a finite break-even count cannot be calculated.
